Topics in Environmental Policy and Management: Communicating Climate Change

This course surveys climate change communications and their role in climate change policy. Together we will assess the state-of-the-art of climate change communication in light of scientific evidence as well as our own perceptions and reactions.

We'll explore the usefulness of theories and frameworks such as mental models and social marketing to evaluate and improve climate change communications.

We'll investigate who is communicating climate change, what and how they are communicating, and what they are achieving with their efforts.

We'll examine the use of climate change communication as a policy tool. Is it ethical for governments to try to sway opinions by evoking emotions, or to forego doing so? How can and should climate change communication facilitate social change?
