Richard Thompson is an affiliate professor of public affairs at the Evans School and also teaches courses through Cascade Executive Programs on leadership, budget, integrated management, and intergovernmental relations.

Prior to his work with the Evans School, Thompson served as the interim director of athletics and director of government for the University of Washington. He also served as the director for the Washington State Office of Financial Management under former Governor Gary Locke and as chief of staff for former Governor Booth Gardner. Under Gardner, Thompson also served as the director of the Washington State Department of Community Staff secretary of the Department of Social and Health Services. He also served for 15 years as the city attorney and/or city manager for the cities of Snohomish, Everett, and Puyallup.

Thompson is the 2001 recipient of the Seattle-King County Municipal League’s Warren G. Magnuson Award and University of Washington School of Law Alumni Association’s Service Reception Award.

Thompson holds a Juris Doctorate in the University of Washington School of Law.
