Putnam Barber is a senior advisor for the Nancy Bell Evans Center on Nonprofits & Philanthropy at the Evans School and author of Nonprofits in Washington, a series of reports on the scope and character of nonprofit organizations in Washington state. In addition to his work with the Nancy Bell Evans Center, Barber has worked since the early 1990s to build strong nonprofits and communities in his home state of Washington through service with The Evergreen State Society, Executive Alliance, and Institute of Public Service at Seattle University. He has also served as the editor of the Nonprofit FAQ since its inception, which is now a service of Action Without Borders.

Barber has taught about nonprofits in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at Seattle University and serves on the editorial board for Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. He is an Advisor to the American Law Institute's project to develop a volume presenting The Principles of the Law of Nonprofit Organizations. He is a member of the Charities Advisory Council in the office of the Washington Secretary of State and of the Washington State Board of Geographic Names in the Department of Natural Resources. He has also been a board member for the Thomas C. Wales Foundation and Chair of the board of Trustees of the Municipal League of King County.

Barber holds a Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in economics from Haverford College.
