Several Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows and Afghan Scholars took part in the 60th anniversary celebration of the Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS). The celebration included a CulturalFest on November 5 in the HUB Ballroom and a dinner on November 8 at Ocean City Chinese Restaurant in Seattle.
Those who attended the dinner met FIUTS founders, board members, alumnus, beneficiaries, staff, and host families.
"The FIUTS 60th anniversary dinner was interesting because of the level of the turnout and enthusiasm shown by the participants," said Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow Fazel Rabi Haqbeen.
At the CulturalFest on November 5, fellows shared in a sampling of clothing, food, artifacts, maps, cultural information, and other international items of interest on display at booths representing countries from all around the world. There were also live musical and dance performances.
"It was interesting to exhibit in an environment where you have a diverse audience. We met University of Washington students and faculty members," said Haqbeen, who hosted a booth about Afghanistan.
Humphrey Fellows who joined Haqbeen in the celebration include:
- Petros Dlamini (Swaziland)
- Svetlana Malkarova (Russia)
- Carol Mumba (Zambia)
- Claude M'Bayia (Cote d'Ivoire)
- Kyung Yeol "Richard" Koo (South Korea)
- Leda Shiyakova (Bulgaria)
- Claudine Zongo (Burkina Faso)
